Reducing Burnout Among Veterinarians

We are asking you to participate in a research study titled "Reducing Burnout Among Veterinarians." This study is being led by Dr. Brittany Bond, Dr. Sunita Sah, and Dr. Duanyi Yang from Cornell University. You should read the information below, and ask questions about anything you do not understand, before deciding whether or not to participate.

PURPOSE AND PROCEDURES

The purpose of this study is to identify and test strategies that can be used to reduce the rate of burnout among veterinarians. You will be asked to fill out surveys about your work and home life and your symptoms of stress and burnout. These answers will not be shared with anyone but the research team and will be used in deidentified forms. You may attend up to five virtual 1-hour sessions via Zoom which will guide you through manager supportive behaviors intervention and your role in the change.

PRIVACY/CONFIDENTIALITY/DATA SECURITY

Multiple steps will be taken to protect the privacy of those who agree to participate in this study:

  1. We will not be recording the video or audio of participants in the virtual zoom workshops.
  2. The original survey data will be kept in a secure Cornell-protected file location. The data will be identified using alpha-numeric identifiers instead of your name. A unique, alpha-numeric identifier will be assigned to each participant, and your survey responses will be identified by this code only. A key linking the alpha-numeric codes to the participants will be kept on a secure computer, with one hard-copy stored in a locked cabinet. Both electronic and hard copy version will be destroyed after the conclusion of the study.
  3. De-identified data from this study may be shared with the research community at large to advance science and health. We will remove or code any personal information that could identify you before files are shared with other researchers to ensure that, by current scientific standards and known methods, no one will be able to identify you from the information we share.
  4. Your information will not be used or distributed for future research studies.

BENEFITS

Likely direct benefits of participation include increased understanding of facilitating personal work-life balance. The expected benefit to society is a greater understanding of burnout among employees, specifically veterinarians, and how we can manage burnout at both an individual and organizational level. If you participate in the program, which includes completing both surveys, in recognition of our appreciation we extend the offer of a complimentary 2024 AVMA Business and Economic Forum Registration, valued at $450, with the opportunity to earn 7 Continuing Education credits.

PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL

Participation in this study is completely voluntary and you are free to choose whether to be in it or not. If you choose to be in this study, you may subsequently withdraw from it at any time without penalty or consequences of any kind. The investigator may withdraw you from this study if circumstances arise which warrant doing so. Participation or non-participation in this study will have no effect on your employment or the evaluation of your job performance. We do not anticipate any risk from participating in this research.
